What is the difference between a residential/domestic, commercial and industrial installation?
Residential/Domestic Installations
This is an installation on a property that is confined to private residential activities ONLY, with domestic appliances served by not more than two LP Gas vapour cylinders of which only one is in service at any one time as limited by the requirements of SANS 10087-1
An installation in this category may be undertaken by either a domestic/residential, commercial or industrial installer.
This is an installation on a property that is used for any commercial activities that use appliances of either a domestic or commercial nature or a combination of both, LP Gas storage facilities, LP Gas filling stations and may be either vapour or liquid installations as limited by the requirements of SANS 10087-1 and SANS 10087-7.
Note that commercial activities taking place on a residential property, e.g. a nursery school or a B&B ,a factory, a resturant makes the installation a commercial one.
An installation in this category may be undertaken by either a commercial or an industrial installer.
This encompasses installations, repairing and inspecting appliances and equipment for industry, bulk road and rail carriers and any installation drawing LP Gas from a bulk supply vessel of over 1000 kilograms stored capacity as limited by the requirements of SANS 10087-1, SANS 10087-7 and SANS 10087-3.

What is required to do a commercial gas installation?
No matter the size of gas cylinder Eg 9kg gas cylinder or a 19kg gas cylinder or 48kg gas or any amount of gas cylinders that you are going to be using on the property fire approval needs to be applied for from the fire department in your area. If a gas installers does not get a set of drawings stamped and approved from the fire department it will be a illegal gas installation. If there was ever an insurance claim the claim may be rejected because no fire approval was done.
Please note that we will NOT quote on any system without having physically visited the proposed site or having seen a FULL set of current and approved building plans. Furthermore, where a gas system requires Fire Department approval, our quotation is subject to changes required by the Fire Department.
What does fire approval entail ?
Fire approval is a specific set of drawings drawn up showing the amount of gas cylinders and where they are situated on the property . It's is normally a set of drawing showing the gas installation from different angles. One set of the fire approval drawings is kept at the fire department another is given to the customer the last copy of the drawings is kept by the registered gas installer and kept with a copy of the gas compliancy certificate that was issued to the customer. There is a cost in drawing up these drawings getting them approved and stamped from the fire department.
FIRE APPROVAL DOES NOT MEAN THAT THE FIRE BRIGADE COME VISIT THE SITE AND SAY WHAY IS WRONG & WHAT IS RIGHT.
A PROPER FIRE APPROVAL MEANS A SET OF DRAWING IS DRAWN UP AND SENT FOR APPROVAL AT THE FIRE DEPARTMENT.
Does a commercial installation need to be in a gas cylinder cage?
If the commercial gas installation is going outside it most certainly does have to go in a gas cylinder cage.
